Imaginary Audience Syndrome
Say what you may about on-line social networking – I love it! I have the best time interacting with people from all over the world in cyber-space. My favorite network is Facebook. There is more caring, sharing and praying going on in the group of friends I have found there than in any other social group I have ever been a part of.
Not everyone drawn to your Wall or Page is of like mind either. That’s ok. Often those people carry qualities you dismissed in yourself long ago. That doesn’t mean you no longer have those qualities it just means you stopped recognizing them. It is a good thing to revisit your discarded self. The physical distance takes the edge off and makes it an easier experience to behold.
Yes, there is some serious imaginary audience syndrome going on with these network sites. But heck, that goes on when we are home alone. The ego will not be denied my friends – plain and simple.
I really do believe for all of the nonsense presented on Facebook on any given day? It really is a gathering of angels. A gathering meant to enlighten the world. A gathering which heals, nurtures, and promotes happiness. For some people it may be the only way they feel safe interacting with other human beings.
Hey, whatever it takes?
Yesterday, after spending only thirty minutes on FB, I drank in beautiful art from three different museums in Europe. Found a great Key Lime Pie recipe. Read headlines from around the world. Heard both sides of an important current political debate. I also had the opportunity to pray for six different families who have sickness and trouble they are dealing with. I listened to some jazz. Gershwin. Mozart. Watched a video of a baby laughing that puts a smile on my face when I think of it today.
Some people believe it is a waste of time to “hang-out” on these social sites. I am sure there is a lot of time wasted. Time when we could be doing something else. But ya know, spending time with “my friends” in between my Readings just feels good. And feeling good is still the best reason in the world to do something.
I am inspired by the quotes shared and stories told. Lifted up by the photos posted and music played. I enjoy the laughter and I support the tears.
It may seem silly to be cyber-consorting with people you have never met half way across the world. But the truth is, it is in these every day exchanges where minds are being changed for the better. Understanding is blooming.
Hearts are touched.
And anytime hearts are touched? It’s a beautiful thing, baby.
