Lying In Wait
On one hand I feel the truth is overrated. On the other hand I detest being lied to. Recently, I have had the distinct pleasure of being lied to right to my face, up close and personal, just the way I like it. I know I am a bit gauche as humans go but everytime I think about it I can’t help but laugh out loud. Perverse I know. But I wonder? Did this person ever meet me? Do they know what I do for a living? Why would they ever think I would believe a word they have to say anyway? Considering the fact that I have seen this person in action and their tired act is always the same. They lie from morning until night!
They lie to others. They lie to themselves. They lie in wait and home in for the best opportunity to tell another lie to support the last lie they told. What an actor! Impressive. Too bad the Oscar will most likely go to Meryl. Why do they do it?
In order to lie you have to have intention and commitment. And you must keep the truth a secret. Lying is purposeful and comes easily to people who do not fare well with conflict. I wonder? Do liars actually believe the tales they spin? What’s in it for them? I always ask myself when attempting to understand perplexing human behavior; “Where is the benefit?”
The benefit varies however there are people in this world who lie like politicians just so they can be right. This feeling of rightness is what drives them. It’s a sort of entitlement that sociopaths feel they have the right to “bless” others with. Narcissism gives them the internal right to manipulate others with lies. A general feeling of being better than the people they lie to. They don’t owe you the truth. You’re no one special. Your soul has taken a hit and your identity has been challenged. You may never be able to trust yourself or another again but how is that the liar’s problem?
Resentment can turn to bitterness if you are not careful. If you are the kind of person who finds it hard to forgive poor treatment this sort of thing may affect your ability to be open and loving for a very long time. I suggest you keep the faith and don’t go changin.’
Here’s the thing.
Liars do not lie to you because you are wearing a sign on your forehead that says; ” Call me stupid and tell me pretty lies.” They lie because they find the truth an inconvenience and in that moment when they share the falsehood? You are an inconvenience as well.
Now isn’t that convenient?
What to do? You can confront them. Or laugh it off.
I choose laughter.
Then again I always do.
