It Was A Dark And Stormy Night
No one can tell what goes on in between the person you were and the person you become. No one can chart that blue and lonely section of hell. There are no maps of the change. You just come out the other side. Or you don’t. – Stephen King
I was a dark and stormy night. The winds of change came in from the south east with a such a vengeance – it liked to knock ya down like a set of nine pins. The past was gone. The present was sketchy. The future was begging to be chosen. And it is best you do the choosing. It rarely works out for best any other way. Letting your pain and confusion choose will put a hurtin’ on ya you may have to suffer through for years. So, on a scale of one to ten, choose wisely. Reinvention is a lonesome endeavour. You will need to stay grounded until you are ready to fly.
Your Mama didn’t raise no fool. You know it is time to move on. Thing is, running away and moving toward are two entirely different things. Reinvention requires vision, imagination, and love. Get your senses involved, all six of them. See it, hear it, know it, etc. Letting go of the past and the unsuitable present you own now will take a little doing. A ritual may be in order! Don’t you just love those?
I suggest taking pen in hand and writing down just how grateful you are for the lessons you have learned from the era you are letting go of. Note the blessings one by one that your past life has given you. Recognize who and what you have become because of loss, unhappiness, or a bad situation that is also a part of that point in time. See all of it clearly, create a huge bubble in your imagination. Put this chapter of history in the bubble and let it rise toward the setting sun. Wave good bye. Take the paper you wrote your ritual on and toss it in the fireplace, burn it. Or tear it up. Do this as many times as you must to really wrap your senses around it. It may seem to be a woo woo thing to do but never discount the power of a proper ritual. They are an important part of any transition.
It is important that you know what you want next and be jazzed about it. Get a clear vision. Again, write it down. Write down what it all looks and feels like. It is most important that you write down how you look, feel, and love in this untapped future. I can’t tell you how to look or feel but I can tell you to be sure that you will be loving and loved well. It’s important.
Stephen King is right when he says that there are no maps of change. This ritual isn’t a map. You have already changed. You have come out the other side of hell and now you are ready to enjoy a new kind of heaven. The ritual is merely a reminder of where you want to be.
Commit to the new world you are creating for yourself. Do something everyday to honor your vision. Resistance will have you doing nothing at times. Old bad habits may rear their ugly little heads. Don’t allow this. Find a way to keep walking to the future you want. Find the courage to live your vision without apology and without some of the people you already know you are going to have to leave behind to make it happen.

And so it is!
