We humans have an abyss inside us. The more power people have, the greater the danger. – Helmut Kohl

The abyss. A subterranean ocean of primal chaos before creation. Also known as Hell. I have used this quote from Nietzsche before here; ‘Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.’

It was true in the 19th Century, it holds now.

It is the habit of creative people to surf the abyss. Go dark. Invite the Devil in for tea. We feel we must wrestle with our demons. Somehow, remain whole, pretty, and have something new to sing about in light of it. Maybe walk away with a black eye for our efforts and call it a win.

That dark night of the soul thing is overrated.

Sure, you may wake up with a new identity if you survive it. Maybe. Most likely you will have opened up ancient scarred wounds that will have to heal all over again before you can move forward. Living in the shadows, dreaming and yearning is the hell we know. Madness? No problem. We got madness in spades.

Nothing sweeter than suffering that tastes like hope.

At some point one assumes abyss surfing it is no longer a viable way to experience love and life.

Once we are spiritually fit we choose the stars over the scars and cut bait when we can no longer afford madness as if it were so much loose change.

If you are reading this blog chances are you have made enough birthday wishes to know that most of them won’t come true. A Spiritual Path is a labyrinth not a straight up hill climb. We constantly come back to things we thought we understood. Swore we learned the lesson. Vowed never to return to the scene of that particular shaming crime. Shamed or not we return to find deeper more lasting intel over and over again.

Our lessons are our lessons. Liking them is optional.

It is helpful if we do not hook up with the Devil himself to walk us home.

This being said. Most folks think the Devil is evil incarnate. That is not the truth. The truth is the Devil/Darkness has a job. That job is to punish. What better way to feel the burning edges of Hell but administering self-punishment? Right? Yeah. A little self-punishment goes a long way so try not to hurt yourself beyond repair.

That’s Soul work for ya. Labyrinthine at best.

There is a song that will sing you home no matter.

It’s your job to find the song.

Sending Love, Light & Oceans of Bliss …
